15 Gorgeous Matte Paintings from Digital Art Masters

Matte painting is the process of using photoreferences, 3D objects, and digital painting to create digital artworks, usually for videogames, movies and other visual effects.  Starting with a concept sketch, the artist can then refine their concept by using photorealistic textures for objects in the scene.  Finally, the primary subject is either created in 3D, or greenscreened for a movie, and then a compositing team allows a camera to move through the virtual scene to create the illusion of a 3D environment, while adding dynamic effects such as moving clouds, dynamic lighting, smoke and fire, rain or other effects.
