Superb Rule-of-Thirds Photography

The rule states that an image should be imagined as divided into nine equal parts by two equally-spaced horizontal lines and two equally-spaced vertical lines, and that important compositional elements should be placed along these lines or their intersections. Proponents of the technique claim that aligning a subject with these points creates more tension, energy and interest in the composition than simply centering the subject would.

Beautiful Bursts of Light

On a cold winter’s day, there’s nothing quite like seeing the sun burst through the clouds. Not only does the temperature get a little warmer, the bright orange rays provide such a beautiful scene. It’s days like this when it’s nice to be outside, enjoying the gifts of nature.

Zsolt Zsigmond took these gorgeous shots in his native homeland Hungary. The 31-year-old photographer takes photos so vivid, I can almost feel the fresh air.

Rays of Light

It’s almost unbelievable that self-taught photographer Lars van de Goor didn’t use Photoshop to digitally enhance these images. “All the sun-rays in my images are real,” he says. “My composition are 99% genuine, the only editing I do is coloring and getting rid of garbage, lanterns, things like that.

The Fine Art of Dogs

British photographer Tim Flach sees animals in a completely different way. Having completed postgraduate studies at St. Martins School of Art London, Flach shoots stylized animal portraits that look more like fine art than framed shots of your puppy. Commercially trained as a professional photographer for over 25 years, Flach’s conceptual style has been shaped by his background not just in photography but in, curiously, painted sculptures.

Photography: One Dead Tree

For over five years now, Day has been photographing the same tree on different days, through different seasons and in different lighting conditions. His most popular shot was taken one very early morning on August 18, 2005. He reminisces, it was “when the sun rose directly behind the tree from my best viewpoint and the early morning mist lingered and the dissipated at just the right moment, I couldn’t take shots quick enough, the light was changing by the second and I could feel myself actually getting emotional and excited by taking photos of a dead tree!”

Universe is Now Visible

While NASA’s Hubble is one of the largest and most well-known space telescope for astronomy, it’s the not the only one NASA uses. In fact, there are four large, powerful space-based telescope that fall under NASA’s series of Great Observatories – Hubble, the now deorbited Compton Gamma Ray Observator (CGRO), Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO) and Spitzer Space Telescope (SST). Each serves a particular function (Hubble – visible light and near-ultraviolet, CGRO – gamma rays, hard x-rays, CXO – soft x-rays, and SST – infrared spectrum), examining a specific region of the electromagnetic spectrum.
