TechLust: The Top 10 Gadgets of 2010

2010 was a storied year for gadgets and technology.  While we’re stilling waiting for flying cars, space travel, jet packs and photon cannons, the top 10 gadgets of 2010 were amazing in their own right.  This was the year of the iPad, the electric car and controller-free gaming.  While those technologies may not take us to Mars, they will make our lives more fulfilling and fun.  From our perspective, here are the top 10 gadgets of 2010, new technologies worthy of celebration.

Windows Phone 7 Tablet Concept

LG, Samsung and ASUS have all developed hardware for Windows Phone 7, but none tickle my fancy quite as much as this WP7 tablet concept, which has a kickstand that folds into a keypad, and joystick controls on the back. It’s the work of designer Umang Dokey, who dreamt up the 8-inch tablet with two webcams and the aforementioned hardware niceties. The two joysticks would be ideal for gaming, acting like shoulder buttons—they could even be handy when scrolling through documents or the web. A kickstand that folds in front to become a keypad is a terrific idea—especially when it’s implemented into the actual device, unlike the iPad’s keyboard kickstand.

Ninjas Employ Their Own Method Of Unboxing a Nexus One

In this Google-sponsored video by Patrick Boivin, stop-motion ninjas show us only the second unboxing that I can describe as “action-packed.” They easily defeated the Nexus One packaging, but their arch-rival Blister Pack won’t go down so easy.

Microsoft’s ‘Courier’ Tablet

Courier is a real device, and we’ve heard that it’s in the “late prototype” stage of development. It’s not a tablet, it’s a booklet. The dual 7-inch (or so) screens are multitouch, and designed for writing, flicking and drawing with a stylus, in addition to fingers. They’re connected by a hinge that holds a single iPhone-esque home button. Statuses, like wireless signal and battery life, are displayed along the rim of one of the screens. On the back cover is a camera, and it might charge through an inductive pad, like the Palm Touchstone charging dock for Pre.

Zune HD color options revealed in pre-order email

We already knew that the Zune HD would be available in five different colors, and a just sent out pre-order email has now given us our first (very small) glimpse of the options available. In addition to the standard black and silver (or platinum, as Microsoft calls it), it seems you’ll also have your choice of blue, lime green, and a red / maroon color, each of which can also be adorned with your choice of 10 exclusive Zune Originals designs. From the looks of it, however, folks pre-ordering are limited to the two less colorful options.

OS X Snow Leopard vs. Windows 7: The Final Countdown

It’s easier than ever to pit Windows 7 and OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard head-to-head: They’re launching soon, both within a month of each other—and both are basically glorified service packs of the current OS.

In way, they’re opposites: Windows 7 uses the same core foundation as Vista while fixing issues and prettying up the outside, while Snow Leopard keeps most of the same spots while re-arranging how things work internally. But the mission is the same—to evolve their current OS—not change the whole game. And launching this fall, we can’t avoid a comparison study. The stars of Redmond and Cupertino have never been so closely aligned before.

Zune HD is official, heading your way this Fall

That’s right folks, the Zune HD is real, and it’s coming this Fall. Microsoft officially announced the next iteration in their Zune line today, making it less of a tripped out pipe dream, and more of a totally tubular reality. The specs, which look exactly like that leak we saw, go like this: 3.3-inch, 480 x 272 OLED capacitive touchscreen display, built-in HD Radio receiver, HD output (utilizing a new dock — not on-board), and… not much more right now. Microsoft is doing away with the famed squircle in favor a full multitouch device, and they seemed to indicate that some new touch-friendly apps and games would be headed our way, though they were fairly mum when it came to details. The device will boast an IE-based, customized browser, but little else was said in the way of software.

Microsoft XYZ

Team Xbox claims to have sources inside Microsoft who are working on a new device that “sits somewhere in-between the Xbox and Zune platforms.”

Whether or not this device is the fabled “Pink” Zune Phone is unclear, but Team Xbox is pretty sure that the device they’ve heard about lacks a phone.

Codenamed the “xYz” during discussions, the device will feature a WVGA touchscreen and a series of new hardware features not currently seen on the market (these features are unclear, and could include WiMax or graphics processing chipsets). It will implement Live Anywhere in a way that unites Microsoft’s digital storefronts, allowing music and movies to play on the xYz and Xbox.
